[The feed turns on first to show Dirk's Wingull, perched neatly atop his hair as per usual, looking pleased as punch. Dirk then tilts it down to show his own face, wearing a crooked grin as he brings it down from where he'd obviously been holding it up to show the Pokémon off on his gear.]

So as a generalized guesstimation, how long does it take most people to name their Pokémon? Curiosity, since it took me forever to name this little asshole.

His name's Squarewave, by the way.

Hey, Dave, when do you figure we ought to get the fuck out of here and stop mooching off your best friend and his sister?

[For castmates in Casa de Eglonde in Ecruteak, Dirk is perched on the arm of the couch in the living room with his gear and his Wingull, doing nothing in particular.]

I was thinking tomorrow since they're leaving on a cruise and we have badges to collect. Well, [He picks apart some string cheese with thumbs and pointer fingers. It separates into thin strands.]

We can do anything else we want too. I have the elite challenges to do, you have the flying badge to nab along with others.

It's so cold we can have vapor raps but, traveling again would be pretty cool.

[He watches in vague interest as Dave tears apart his string cheese, and Squarewave perks like he would appreciate Dave sharing. Dirk fidgets with his gear a moment longer before turning his full attention to Dave.]

Sounds like a plan, then. I haven't got much shit, but is there anything in particular I should be packing?

I've been here for a couple weeks and I still haven't named my starter... I also caught a couple Pokemon recently that I haven't named yet either. For some reason, naming things is just really hard for me.

Looks like we have that in common, broseph. I named this asshole after a robot I made back home because he's small and obnoxious. Guess that means I need a bigger bird to name after the other one. They're sort of a set.

What's hard about naming the things? You just look at it and decide what fits.

I'm not used to owning shit that requires naming. Like, sentient things. Usually they already come with names, since usually they're people. Only other things I've had to worry about naming are robots, and they don't really give a shit what I call them.

Not too long. I think it depends on the person, though, and I have a "theme".

It depends on the pokemon for me. Sometimes I give them temporary names until I could decide on an actual name for them. Sometimes it just comes off the top of my head the second I look at them.

I'm starting to think I should never have children if I'm having this much trouble when it seems to come naturally to other people. I guess I'm just not accustomed to naming conventions.

However long it takes. Naming them is pretty important, so you feel like whatever you put down must count.

Just that sometimes, you can pick the right name right away, or it takes you a while to think. Or you get a sudden flash of inspiration later on.

Good way to look at it. Guess it is sort of important, naming shit. Seeing as the critter's stuck with that name pretty much forever from that point on.

It took me until I found a Pokemon that wasn't quite as unfortunate as the one I started out with before inspiration struck; however, I think it isn't terribly difficult if you find a theme and stick with it.

Naming things sometimes takes time, you know? You have to look at them and just kind of know. A name can be a special thing.

A few minutes or so...I just pick the video game name that works best. My first partner's name was "Kirby"....

That's a good way to start, actually. Except now I can't name one Kirby 'cause I'd feel unoriginal.

I name them as soon as possible. It seems terrible not to have a name.

[Bec is gonna try and crawl onto Dirk's lap in the meantime.] Squarewave looks really happy where he is! He must really like you.

I'm not quite as much of an animal empathetic as you are, Harley. But-- ah. He's a pretty happy bird, yeah. [He idly scritches the Wingull's throat affectionately.]
